► Advice and Support

In this section you should be able to find out where you can get the advice and support that you need for any issues you may have.
The students union offers you a free and confidential service that deals with Academic Issues such as making an appeal or dealing with an accusation of Academic Misconduct. Our aim is to help resolve any problems at the earliest possible stage so as to reduce any further impact on the course.

Union Support Service - What do we help with?

  • What to do if you have failed a module and are being told to withdraw from your course
  • Making an appeal
  • What to do if you are experiencing personal problems which are affecting your ability to study
  • How to make a complaint
  • Dealing with harassment or bullying (by staff or students)
  • What to do if you have been accused with academic misconduct
  • What to do if you are accused of breaking the University Disciplinary Regulations
  • Any other dispute or complaint that you may have with the University, your School or your course

What help do we give?

The USS will spend time talking and listening to the individual student in order to understand the situation and how the student is being affected. We will then explain all of the different options and what is involved with each one.

Once the student has decided on their preferred action we will work with the student to make it happen. This may involve assistance with writing letters, explaining relevant rules and regulations, preparing for meetings or hearings with students, attending those meetings or hearings.

In certain cases, it may also be possible for the USS to make representations to the relevant departments on behalf of a student.

What is the benefit of visiting the USS for advice?

Our students are always in charge of what is done in relation to their case, but they benefit from our experience of University procedures in a number of different ways.
This includes ensuring that students are following the correct procedures, ensuring that they submit strong and well written cases for consideration and ensuring that they are well prepared to present their case as and when necessary.
Statistics show that students are much more likely to resolve their issues more promptly and favourably if they take advice from the USS.
