► Office of the Independent Adjudicator

The Office of the Independent Adjudicator (OIA) provides an independent scheme for students to review their cases with the University. They can make a recommendation to the University that your complaint is justified and for the University to overturn their decision. It cannot compel the University to accept their judgement, but it would be very unusual for the University not to.

You can only apply for the OIA deal with your complaint once you have completed all stages of making an appeal or review which are listed under the regulations of Senate. The University should send you a “Completion of Procedures” letter stating that there are no further actions for you to take within the University. Once you have received this letter you have up to 3 months to apply to the OIA for them to review your case.

The OIA will not deal with your complaint if:

• It relates to a matter of academic judgement (for example you want a change in your marks)

• The matter is or has been subject of court proceedings

• It is about student employment

• It is an admissions matter

The OIA is a completely independent organisation all matters dealt by them will be treated in the strictest confidence. As with all stages of your case the Union Support Service will be happy to help you submit your case to the OIA.
