► The Panel

The panel will consist of academic staff from your school or programme. You will be allowed to have someone go with you but you must inform the panel if you want to do this. If you fail to show or decide not to attend the hearing then it will continue without and the decision will be made in your absence.

At the hearing you will be asked questions (if you have taken someone with you they cannot speak on your behalf) about the accusation which has been put to you. This will be your chance to explain what happened you can also give a written statement to the panel as well.

The panel will then decide if academic misconduct has taken place or not. It will consider the instance of the misconduct (whether this is the first or subsequent time of the student being accused) to what extent is the misconduct (major or minor) and whether it was committed deliberately. But remember you don’t have to have intentionally committed academic misconduct to be accused or found guilty of it.

They will also decide what the penalty for the offence should be, depending on the severity of the accusation it could range from a reduction in your marks, a fail (0%) with the re-sit or resubmission mark capped. Or in the worst case scenario you could be withdrawn from the course altogether.

Remember the Union Support Service is there to help you through every stage, from the time you get your letter to attending the hearing with you.
