► Where or how do I get a form?

You should be able to get the forms from your department or if not it should state in your handbook where and how to submit the form for your course. If you are still unsure then check with your course or school administrator/officer.

You must submit along with your form your evidence or information to support your reasons for applying for extenuating circumstances failure to do so may lead to your claim being rejected or delayed.

What happens after I’ve submitted the form?

A panel will be established to consider your form and will consider whether you have a valid case or not. They will decide that:

• Extenuating Circumstances have occurred AND whether the circumstances

• Prevented you from completing the assessment OR

• Affected your capacity to study prior to the assessment OR

• Had an adverse effect on you performance during the assessment

It will then decide what level of impact the circumstance had on your assessment. If deemed to be minor then a review of the borderline classification/progression/award will be considered. Which basically means your mark would be rounded up i.e instead of being awarded 39.5 you would be awarded 40.

If major you may be given the opportunity to have another attempt at the assessment as another first attempt or given another resit. If you choose to take the assessment again the mark you get will be permanent even if it is lower than your previous mark.

If the circumstances affect your last exam or assessment then you may be granted the following outcomes

• Undertake a review of borderline classification/progression/award cases

• Substituting the assessment component for an alternative but equivalent assessment task

• Substituting the mark with a mark that is consistent with your marks from previous assessments (within a given timescale)

•  Raising the mark to a mark that is consistent with marks from previous assessments (within a given timescale)

Once the panel has decided what outcome to award you they will tell the Assessment Board who should then take the recommendation into account when awarding your mark.
