► NUS
The NUS is an organisation which helps support all students’ unions around the country who are affiliated to them. Through this affiliation they help represent the interest of more than seven million students. Much like your own City University London Students’ Union they are student led and have a democratically elected executive body the NEC (National Executive Committee).
It was established in 1922 and since then it has worked tirelessly to campaign for student rights and is now the largest student organisation in the world.
It campaigns nationally on behalf of its members and promotes equality and diversity. Topics have included demonstrations against top up fees, encouraging students to register to vote in national and local elections with their “Vote for Students” campaign. They also run an environmental campaign called the Sound Impact Awards which seeks to capture and promote positive green innovations CULSU has already won its first Bronze standard.
Every year it holds a conference to which every affiliated university and college in the country sends along their delegates. The number of delegates allowed per university or college is dependent of the number of students who go to that particular institution. City usually sends around 6 students to represent our interest. At the conference students get to vote on national issues and elected the NEC members. Other conferences are held throughout the year to discuss specific issues such as the Black student conference.
The Students' Union holds elections to determine who our delegates for the conferences will be. These normally take place in the Spring term.
