Environmental Aspects and Impacts Statement

Aspects:

City University London Students’ Union recognises that it’s operation has significant impacts on the environment. Energy consumption and waste are two of the key aspects of our work that contribute to damaging the environment.

Key aspects of our work that we are actively changing include:

  • The energy used to heat our buildings
  • The energy used to cool and manage air quality in our buildings
  • The energy used by halogen or other less efficient forms of lighting in our buildings
  • The energy wasted by not correctly switching off equipment after use
  • How we generate waste including our choices of printed materials or using electronic means of communication
  • How we manage waste including recycling paper, cardboard and plastic rather than generating landfill
  • Our choice of travel for work related business

Key impacts:

Our energy is not currently supplied by exclusively renewable sources. Therefore our energy consumption directly contributes to carbon emissions and in turn to global warming. Global warming is having direct impacts on natural habitats and ecosystems. The impacts of this are felt by both animals and on the lives of many people across the world.

Our packaging, electrical and other equipment, printed materials and office consumables are not exclusively procured from renewable sources. Our waste is not exclusively disposed of through environmentally friendly means and as such the Unions activity contributes to landfill and the consumption of limited resources. This has a direct impact on the environment in terms of landfill and on supporting environmentally destructive activities such as the depletion of scarce resources such as oil and other non-renewable commodities.
