Top Ten Tips for Running a Great Campaign!
Give every candidate a fair chance of being heard and every voter an equal right to hear all candidates’ views and cast their vote.
Campaign positively for what you stand for and do not base your approach on attacking the opposition.
3. Write a great manifesto
Define what issues you will campaign on and come up with an engaging strap-line. Present your case clearly and concisely. Your manifesto will play a big part in the success or failure of your campaign.
4. Communicate
Students need to know who you are and what you stand for. Take every opportunity to connect with them, in person and electronically. If they don’t hear from you, they won’t vote for you!
5. Follow the rules
Make sure you attend the Candidates’ Meeting on Monday 15th March 2010 and that you are familiar with and adhere to all the election regulations.
6. Use your imagination
Entertaining and quirky campaigns are eye catching and engage students. Use your imagination to capture attention – but keep it safe and within the rules.
7. Use lectures to promote your campaign
Lectures are a great opportunity to reach large numbers of students. Make a short, snappy presentation that highlights how you will represent them if you are elected. Always ask permission first.
Question Time is on Tuesday 23rd March 12.00pm(Midday) in the Students’ Union venue Ten Squared and or Thursday 25th March from 12.00pm in room ?. This is your opportunity to respond to questions from the students you will be representing and who you hope will vote for you.
Candidates for FTO posts will be able to make a short speech outlining their campaign – this is a great showcase opportunity!
9. Practise public speaking
Plan it carefully and practise speaking it out loud at home first. Keep it brief and succinct. Focus on how you will help improve their experience in Higher Education. Don’t forget to smile!
10. Make it fun!
Enjoy running your campaign. If it is entertaining and fun for you, you are more likely to engage your audience. Boring candidates don’t get elected!
IMPORTANT
Strictly no publicity of candidates allowed prior to 17th March 2010. If you are found to have started your publicity (which can include pages on any social networking site such as facebook, emails sent to students at City University London that include any information requesting them to vote for you and the displaying of posters. This also includes any kind of publicity material displayed on your behalf by others) before the start date of campaigning week or before you have attended the Candidates Training Meeting you may NOT be allowed to continue to participate in the elections.
