All voting for the elections will take place using an electronic voting system called Mi voice. If you are eligible to vote simply enter your City University London User ID/Login details (should be a set of 4 letters and 3 numbers) onto the login page following the instructions and cast your vote.
We use a voting system called STV to which allows you to vote for more than one candidate in an order of preference.
Where can you vote
You can vote anywhere online, on campus & off campus. There is a designated polling booth in the Students' Union Main office at Northampton Square all week, where manifestos will be on display for all candidates. A specific voting booth will be placed at Cass in the Courtyard on 25th March between 11am and 2pm.
How you vote
When you the elections site, you will be given a choice of the elections (contest) that you would like to vote in. With this system you do not have to vote in every single contest in one go you simply choose the contest you want to place your vote in, enter you vote and exit the site. You can always log back in to cast your vote in the other contests at a later time, as long as you do it before elections close!

Once you have picked the contest that you are now going to cast your vote in you, you can vote for as many or for as few of the candidates listed as you wish, BUT you must put them in the order of your preference.
For example there are 2 candidates going for the position of President and you would like to vote for both of them, you simply need to state in what order you would like the candidates to win.
(Fictional candidates)
Fred
Sandra
RON – Reopen Nominations
You would like Sandra to win, so Sandra would be your first choice for President, enter number 1 next to her name when casting your vote.
If Sandra doesn’t win then you would like Fred to win so Fred would be your second choice number 2 and finally if Sandra and Fred don’t win you would like to reopen the elections so RON would be choice number 3.
If you have any trouble login in or voting please contact the Students’ Union as soon as possible. If you contact us after the voting period has closed, you will have lost your opportunity to vote.
The Voting System
Single Transferable Voting (STV)
To give voters the maximum voice in elections, the Students’ Union Trustee Board and the University Secretary have agreed that elections shall be conducted using the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system. This system is recommended by the Electoral Reform Society as it gives more choice and more power to the voters. By contrast, in the First-Past-the-Post system, a vote for a less popular candidate can have no impact on the final result and more votes may actually be cast against the winning candidate.
What is Single Transferable Voting (STV) and how does it work?
In elections where there are several candidates and several positions, the STV system allows voters to indicate their choices in order of preference rather than just voting for one person. This means that your vote is likely to make a real difference to the outcome, as your second or third choices could still help a candidate be elected.
When the votes are counted, candidates only need to reach a set ‘quota’, or share of the votes (determined by the size of the electorate and the number of positions to be filled) in order to be elected.
Your vote is counted only once. If your 1st choice of candidate already has enough votes to be elected, your vote is transferred to your second choice, or on to the third etc., in accordance with your stated preferences.
In this way, the STV system ensures that your vote is used to support at least one of your preferred candidates and very few votes are wasted.
