Below you will find a list of questions that we generally get asked about during elections.  If you don’t see an answer to your query please contact the Students’ Union by either emailing studentsunion@city.ac.uk or by phoning 020 7040 5600

Why do we have elections?

It’s a way of selecting students from the entire student’s body (20000+) to represent their peers on a local and national platform for both academic and non academic matters.

Am I eligible to stand in the election?

All students currently registered on a City University course are normally eligible to stand and vote in the election.

The following exceptions apply:

For all elected posts:

  • Students who have decided to opt out of Union membership are not eligible to stand or vote in any Students’ Union election.

  • Students who are at validated, partnership institutions or on study abroad or exchange programmes not eligible to stand or vote in any Students’ Union election.

You cannot stand for more than one FTO or SRO post, but can stand for NUS delegate regardless of any other posts.

For Full Time Officer positions only:

In addition to the above, all students who stand for one of the Full time positions must be eligible to be a trustee under Charity Law.  This will not affect most students, however you cannot be a trustee in the unlikely event that:

a.     You have an unspent conviction for an offence involving deception or dishonesty;

b.     You are an undischarged bankrupt;

c.     You have been removed from trusteeship of a charity by the Court or the Commissioners for misconduct or mismanagement; and

d.     You are under a disqualification order under the Company Directors Disqualification Act 1986.

As a Full Time Officer you will be expected to become a trustee of the Students’ Union.  Under the Charities Act 2006 you cannot be a trustee if you meet certain criteria.  The form clearly list what this criteria to be.  See the Elections Regulations Guide for the full details

All students currently registered on a City University course are normally eligible to vote in the election.

  • Students who have decided to opt out of Union membership are not eligible to vote in any Students’ Union election.

  • Students who are at validated, partnership institutions or on study abroad or exchange programmes not eligible to vote in any Students’ Union election.

Voting in these elections will ensure that you have a say in who will represent you and fight for your rights with the University’s top level of management to running campaigns on the issues that you feel most strongly about.  The elections are to elect the highest level of the decision making body of the Students’ Union.  You have the right to decide which students have this decision making power.

The right to vote is one of the key principles of a democratic society and should not be taken for granted.  As you may know in some countries even today it is not a guaranteed right and many people around the world have been victimised for trying to exercise this right.

It is vital that you vote for whom you believe to be the best candidate, who will be the best person to represent your views, issues and any concerns about your experience here at City University London.

The more students that vote in the elections, the more authority you give to those who are elected to speak on your behalf

It is also a great chance to practice for the up and coming General Elections in May 2010.  If you haven’t registered for the General Election you can find out how to do so here or on to the NUS website for find out more about the

Vote for Students Campaign

What is a manifesto?

A manifesto is a written statement made by you stating why students should vote for you and why you are standing in the elections.  It should be no more that 800 words long. It consists of a candidate’s intentions, promises and reasons why people should vote for them.

Why are the Full Time Officers paid?

It is a full time role; students within this role are expected to work a minimum of 35hrs per week and are therefore required to take a year out of their studies.

This is the normal practice in every students union for a Full Time Officer

Depending on your role, you will be expected to attend University meetings such as:

  • Senate
  • University Council
  • APPSC
  • SAC
  • And these Students Union Meetings:
  • EXEC
  • Students Union Council
  • Students Activities Council
  • CULSA Committee

You may also be required to attend residential training session or conferences

What meetings will I be expected to attend as a Part Time Officer?

  • Students Union Meetings
  • EXEC
  • Students Union Council
  • SAC and School SAC or board of studies

What is NUS?

NUS is the National Union of students to which City University London Students Union is affiliated to. They are the national umbrella of all affiliated Students Unions and campaign on national issues that concern students studying in the UK

What and when is the NUS Conference?

NUS Conference is an annual event which all Students ’ Unions who are members of NUS can send delegates to.  At conference you will have the opportunity to debate and decide on what NUS will campaign on during the up and coming year.  Delegates also get to vote on who will be on the National Executive Committee of NUS in the following year.

NUS Conference will be held from the 13th – 15th April in Gateshead.  For more information visit:

www.NUS.org.uk

When will the training for the student officers take place?

The Full Time officers elected will start their induction programme on Monday 19th July 2010 and will be in post until the 31st July 2011.  SRO will be involved in the training but will not have to attend every session.

I’ve been elected what happens now?

The students union will contact all successfully elected officers with information on training dates etc.

What hours will I be expected to work?

For Full Time Officers the contract of employment states that the working week shall consists of a min of 35hrs a week Monday to Friday.  You will be expected to work outside of normal working hours at times due to the nature of the role.  Part Time Officers are not bound by a contract; however we recommend they dedicate at least 2 hours a week to the role. NUS Delegates have to attend NUS conference for the full duration and are expected to report back to EXEC on conference.

Why do Part Time Officers not get paid?

Part Time Officers are not required to take a break from their studies and do not work the same amount of hours as a Full Time Officer.  They are eligible to receive out of pocket expenses.

Is there an expenses budget for campaigning?

For Full Time Officers the max budget is £30.00 for pre approved expenditure.  There is no campaign budget for any other roles. However the Students Union will provide publicity in the Students union notice boards for each candidate if they submit their copy/design by the stated deadline. See the Election Regulations Guide for further information

I want to make a complaint about a candidate’s campaign/behaviour

You will need to contact the Returning Officer or the Deputy Returning Officer in writing.  Please see section 13 of the Elections Regulations Guide for more information.

What is a slate?

A team of students who campaign together under one team name or logo, who wish to be elected into office together.  If you vote for one individual from a slate your vote is only for this individual and not the slate as a whole.

What do I do if I can’t vote?

Double check you have entered the correct user name and password.  It should be a set of 4 letters and 3 numbers.  It will be the login that you use to access your City University email account or to logon to any of the computers around campus.

If you still are unable to vote please contact the Students’ Union during normal office opening hours by email studentsunion@city.ac.uk or by phone 020 7040 5600.
