Freshers Checklist

Is this your first time at City? Or have you not found your way around yet? We are here to help! Below are a list of things that will help you on your way of eeling settled and finding the right location for what you may be looking for. Good Luck!

 

 

1) Got Your University I.D. Card

The majority of ID cards are issued during the student registration process at the beginning of the year. If you have not received one or have lost it, visit or contact the Students Centre

2) Been to Freshers Fayre?

Do you want to fi nd out more about Clubs, Societies and other extra curricular activity, and even pick up some free goodies? Visit the fayres on Wednesday 23rd September 2009, 10am- 3pm. The Clubs and Societies Fayre takes place at Saddlers Sports Centre, the commercial fayre takes place at Ten Squared.

3) Sorted Your Accommodation

Make an appointment to see the accommodation team in the Student centre.

4) Got home (or other) insurance?

It is so important to look after your stuff, whether you are off or on campus. We would advise you to look up different insurance company who can insure your phone, your bike, your car and the contents of your room. A very student friendly insurer is www.endsleigh.co.uk, have a look!

5) Got an Oyster Card?

You can save 30% with an 18+ Student Oyster photocard Students aged 18 or over get 30% off Travelcard and Bus Pass season tickets. Make sure that you are fully registered before applying online at tfl .gov.uk/photocard

6) Got a young persons railcard?

With this card you can get up to 1/3rd of the price of rail travel. You’re eligible if you’re aged 16-25 or if you’re 26+ and in full time study. You can get one by applying online or by going to any British Rail Station (closest station is Kings Cross or Liverpool Street). For more details go to www.16-25railcard.co.uk/

7) Got an NUS Extra Card?

An NUS Extra card brings a range of benefi ts for students at a cost of only £10 per year. There is a range of over 80 specially negotiated discounts, offers & competitions available online or on the high street. Purchase the card online and collect it later from the SU. Visit the NUS website. www.nus.org.uk/NUS-Extra/

8) Got an ISIC Card?

The International Student Identity Card is accepted in over 100 countries and can give you more discounts. For more infor-mation go to any STA Travel Centre or visit www.isiccard.com on how to apply.

9) Got a National Insrance Number?

Are you thinking of working while studying? Then you will need a NI number. It refers to contributions (tax) made by employers and employees. Most employees will require you to have this number before starting work. As students you may get a deduction or even an exemption from paying this tax. Contact the Students Centre for more information.

10) Got a Council Tax Excemption?

All full time students are eligible for Council Tax exemption. The department in which you are studying will give you a letter to confirm you are a student at City, which you will need
to take to your Council. The same letter is used should you require a verifi cation of student status from the University.

11) Been to Saddlers Sports Centre?

Want to get fi t or stay in shape? Then join Saddler Sports from as little as £18.50 per month. They offer a well equipped gym, an indoor sports hall which is for hire and a range of classes including Aerobics, Boxercise, Cardio Circuit, Spinping, as well as pilates and Yoga classes. There is something for everyone, at different times of the day.

13) Registered with the police?

Nationals from certain countries may be required to register with the police within 7 days of arrival in the UK. This requirement will be stamped in your passport if it applies to you. The address to do this at is:

14) Registered with a Doctor?

You can fi nd a doctor by using the NHS Local Search at www.nhs. uk/ which covers most areas. If you are having diffi culties fi nding a doctor please contact the Health Centre who offer a nurse led drop in clinic where they are able to advise you on a range of health issues including advice on minor illness and injuries.
