Generally speaking, willingness to travel will get you cheaper property to rent in London, unless you have financial support from parents and can live somewhere central.

The famous market and old town feel makes for an appealing contrast to recent regeneration, including Nido Spitalfields, a huge tower block of ultra-modern student housing.

 

Overall, postcodes in the north and east seem to win in the popularity stakes, for combined affordability and a youthful vibe. There are always exceptions to the rule however, so it's worth exploring a few alternatives to seek out the best deal for you.
