Start Something New

If you have an idea for a new activity, or one off event or, you are hoping to set up a new club or society, then we can help.

We can offer:

•    Administrative Support – staff advice & assistance & office facilities/ resources
•    Assistance with booking of meeting rooms, sports facilities & transport where possible
•    Promotional opportunities - via the Union website and notice boards
•    Initial start up funding of up to £200

Applying for “start up “funding should be sufficient to enable you to trial and promote your activity and gauge the level of interest from other students. It also gives you the chance to try things out and evaluate what works without having to fill in a lot of paperwork. If you are applying to start up as a new club/society, you will need to get a list of at least 10 proposers who would be part of that activity. For any other one off activities or events, you don’t need this.

What you need to do to get started:

1.    Complete a New Club/Society Application Form
giving a brief outline of your project (anything from a tournament to paint balling or a workshop or taster event) and the support you need and submit this to Student Activities.

Please note:

•    Your activity or event must be open to all students and publicised as such.

•    The aims and objectives of the activity must be in accordance with those of the Union, and be sufficiently different to those of existing activities to merit a new Club or Society being formed. Applications will not be considered from existing Clubs and Societies who should support activities from their budget account or if appropriate apply to the Activity Development Fund.

•    The committee of officers and the activities that are offered must operate within an equal opportunities framework – meaning that the activity must be open to all students without exception. Racism, sexism, homophobia, or any other form of negative discrimination, on any grounds, will not be tolerated.

2.    You will get a decision within 2 weeks (10 working days) of your application being submitted.

3.    If things work out and you want to set up as an official club or society then you can begin to complete the Sponsorship Application process towards the end of the academic year, which once approved will enable you to recruit new members the following September at the Clubs & Societies Fayre and run as a fully fledged Club or Society! If you find your new activity to be successful throughout the first term and you wish to apply for more funding, then you can do so via the different pots of funding available, such as the Activity Development and Course Fund. More information can be found here on the website…
