Amnesty International was founded on the belief in the power of ordinary people to make extraordinary change. With 22 million members worldwide, Amnesty is a charity with an incomparable amount of persuasion, influence and passion with regard to human rights. The City University Amnesty Group is a way for students to become part of the change. We work to educate and inform others of what human rights are and where they are violated, both at home and abroad. We also organise activities and events to raise money to help stop and prevent these violations from continuing. We are looking for people who are passionate and enthusiastic about human right to help us with our aim.

Whilst we collectively choose a project and main event to focus on, any member can use Amnesty to organise their own human rights venture. If there is a particular cause that you want to raise awareness for, the student action network will help you to do so. So if you want to be part of the solution or just learn more about us and human rights email us at calsamnestygroup@gmail.com and come along to a meeting to talk to us.

The Canada and America’s Law Society (CALS) is a group that seeks to foster relationships between students, academics and practicing lawyers. In order to build these relationships, we participate in Pro Bono work, organise mentorship between Law students and host events which cater to the needs of our members namely those who are interested in qualifying in Canada, the UK and New York.

CALS affords students of City Law School the opportunity to engage in academically challenging and fulfilling experiences. Participation in CALS should only prove to strengthen a foreign law student’s preparedness in entering a complex and competitive legal environment. It is this ultimate perceived benefit that makes CALS a needed and seemingly valuable tool in bolstering a foreign law student’s education and training through an already impressive academic legal education offered by City University.

City Poker

Al Alvarez once said, "Serious poker is no more about gambling than rock climbing is about risk taking".

Over the last century, poker has evolved from a game of chance to a sport involving maths, psychology and physical endurance. As the official poker society of City University London, CUPS aims to dispel the age-old notion that poker is a game of pure gambling. We strongly advocate the analytical and statistical elements of the game.

Our activities include the following,

1) Weekly Poker tournaments

2) Poker talks and lectures

3) Social events

Through the league system, CUPS hopes to successfully build a team of players to represent the university in inter-varsity competitions.

The Hindu Society attempts to promote the understanding of social, ethical and philosophical foundations and practises of Hinduism. The society fosters a youthful spirit of dedication and devotion to Hindu values as suited to modern times and current topics. Thus, we aim to cater to those students who have a passion for culture.

We aspire to unite Hindu’s together by providing a fun and unique atmosphere for them to connect with one another, their culture and their faith. We understand the demanding educational nature of university and in turn attempt to provide exciting physical activities and a social environment for our members to be at ease so they can learn and be inspired by Hinduism and also make new friends. Not forgetting that Hinduism is dominated by a large number of divisions and we hold stimulating events for a variety of festivals. This ensures the largest festivals in the Hindu calendar are celebrated with a fresh appeal and that the various meanings behind them are also understood.

So for those who are curious about the culture as well as fro those who are keen to further their knowledge of Hindu philosophy can join us in a welcoming and exciting environment. We also apply our heritage to university subjects ranging from engineering, social science, Cass and law.

To maximize your university experience we have also collaborated with other universities, global charities and youthful communities. For instance, we are affiliated with the NHSF (which encompasses the majority of the Hindu Societies from universities around the country), where we are involved with extensive national initiatives such as the annual sports competition and Sewa week. This is known to be an extraordinary, unforgettable and action packed event.

Today, we have actively pursued our objectives through the organization of a range of shows, forums, social events, guest speakers and camps that have benefited not only the students but the general public as well.

1,300 are dead in GazaIsrael says the war is over – but the borders are still closed, people are still dying, and there is no justice for the victims of Israel’s war crimes. We say there can be no peace until Palestine is free.

The Iraq war was based on lies, 1 million Iraqis have been killed as a result of the war, and it’s unpopular at home. Gordon Brown promised to withdraw British troops when he took power last year, but he has no re-engaged on the promise and British troops remain in Iraq, holed up at the airport.

Meanwhile in Afghanistan, NATO air strikes continue to kill indiscriminately, as eve the US-backed afghan president has called for an end to aerial bombardment. The Taliban control almost 50 percent of Afghanistan, and British and US troops deaths have raised substantially.

Each of these terrible wars is part of the so-called ‘war on terror’ that has seen millions killed.

At home our civil liberties have been eroded, and there has been a rise in racism directed at Muslims. The stain of the war is spreading across the globe, driven by oil and profit.

The only thing standing in its way is the mass movement that brought millions of people onto the streets to oppose the invasion of Iraq. The growth of the anti-war movement is the reason why the recent protests about the war in Gaza where the biggest ever in Britain over the issue, and why the tide of public opinion is starting to turn against Israel

Now its more urgent then ever that we build a mass movement on the campuses and the streets. A movement that will campaign for freedom for Palestine, troops out of IraqAfghanistan, against the invasion of Iran, against Islam phobia and to defence our civil liberties. Join the Stop the War society today!
